For the last 7 weeks I have had the privilege to be a part of an amazing team of women, Heidi St John's book launch team for Prayers for the Battlefield, a follow up prayer guide to last years book Becoming MomStrong. Read my Becoming MomStrong book review here.

I have been blessed beyond measure as she has poured her heart, love, and passion for God's word into all of us these past weeks! So, yesterday was bittersweet as we celebrated LAUNCH DAY!!!
Each week we have all looked forward to our time together as we gather for our live discussions. God's word, no doubt, binds hearts together as we walk side by side through this battle we call life (on earth).
Heidi St. John's Prayers for the Battlefield is more than a book, but is a "guide book" saturated in the word of God. And it is for this reason that I had to share this book with you. It is laced with the encouragement and truth that comes from the depths of Heidi's heart and experience on many tough topics.

Let's face it parenting is just plain HARD! The battles we face with and for our children in today's culture seem as though they are far greater then they have ever been. This place we find ourselves has become a battleground for us as parents, grandparents, and guardians. We now need to fight for the hearts of our precious children.

Heidi says, "God doesn't expect us to come to him with everything figured out. No, he desires that we lay it all out there; our worries, Our fears, are doubts. " ( PFTB pg.21)

1 Chronicles 28:20 also says, "Be strong and courageous, and do the work, don't be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord God, my God, is with you. He will not fail you or forsake you. "

Reading through these heartfelt devotions and prayers, I find my mama heart response to be:
I WANT TO BE BOLD! LORD, MAKE ME BOLD!

Picture
For any Christian family teaching and training their children to live with the heart of God, you will want to keep this incredible resource at your fingertips .
Mamas, I know your weary, but let's link arms and do the work! I encourage you to grab a copy of Prayers for the Battlefield , lace up your boots, get #offthebench, and onto the Battlefield!

You can read the full story of how Heidi St. John and her ministry have impacted me and my family this last year and a half, here in my blog post the-journey-in-becoming.

I would also love for you to join me back here in the next several weeks as I dig into Heidi St. John's Becoming MomStrong Bible Study. I'll be meeting with a group of moms here in my home but, I'll also be sharing highlights of what God is showing me, here on the blog too. I look forward to sharing with you as God reveals his wisdom to me!
Blessings Sweet Mamas,
Melissa

TheĀ  Journey in BECOMING

9/17/2018

I can't recall the exact day or even the exact words my sweet friend sent in her message ....But, I distinctively remember that it was the link to the podcast below that intrigued me!
It was February, COLD, and I NEEDED some motivation to step on that treadmill. I NEEDED to take my mind somewhere else besides the bold red numbers staring back at me. You see my home gym was unfinished and still in its non-climate controlled stage. Let me be perfectly clear. I. HATE. THE COLD!!! (But, before I digress, my home gym is a story for another day).

I stuck my ear buds in and clicked the link. With the help of my friend, my treadmill, and my mobile device, I walked right into the world of podcasts and never looked back.

You see as a blogger I not only write but I read lots of blogs too. Podcasts just weren't my thing. But all that changed with a click.
The Podcast
"Hi everybody, this is Heidi St. John! WELCOME to the Busy Mom podcast! Thanks for joining me in my little corner of the internet."
Picture
The words that followed her, "come join me for coffee" greeting, encouraged my heart and filled my soul. It was just like sitting down with a best friend. You know the one I'm talking about.....!? The friend that is encouraging and gentle, but bold and truthful; every word saturated in the love and truth of God's Word. In just 20 minutes, there was rich conversation, the kind that reaches the raw heart of being a mom. You know, the really hard stuff!

"Oh sweet mama," she says, "there is power in God's Word".

I had no idea how much the first click of that link would change me, but I soaked it in that day and every time I hit play after that. From marraige, to choosing homeschool curriculum, to cultural issues that fill our social media, television, and radio headlines, each topic of discussion laced with biblical truth.

Over a year and a half ago now, this is when it happened.......I ENTERED INTO BECOMING.....Becoming the MomStrong Mom I always wanted to be ! And it truly was the beginning of one the most change filled years of my life. God used it in a major way! And He is still using it.

It was just like sitting down with a best friend. The kind of friend that is encouraging and gentle, but bold and truthful. Every word saturated in the love and truth of God's Word.
The Book
Hearing Heidi's wisdom and passion for teaching and bringing up our children in the Word of God set my mama heart on fire. More of THIS is what I wanted for our homeschool day and for my children! Less than six short months later I was a faithful follower of The Heidi St. John Podcast.
So naturally, when the time came announcing that there was going to be a book and she needed a launch team, the application was up on my screen before her podcast closing jingle was finished.
Picture
Then....... it landed in my inbox. Over the Moon Excited, I WAS IN!
Picture
"Something about being face to face with her in those following weeks and digging into her book just knit my heart right to hers. Her uninhibited passion for teaching God's word to our children could do nothing less than seep into our hearts further."
I had heard her voice weekly and seen her picture on the website BUT NOW......
I was seeing her live on my screen! That sweet mentor who had been speaking into my life and into my heart was now talking right to little ole me (and 499 other beautiful mamas, Haha)! Something about being face to face with her in those following weeks and digging into her book just knit my heart right to hers. Her uninhibited passion for teaching God's word to our children could do nothing less than seep into my heart further.

She took us through what it means to be a warrior for the hearts and minds of our children.
She encouraged us to face our giants and choose to obey in spite of our FEAR.
Assured us that a season of surrender is only re-purposed passion.
And gave us confidence that,
"Your greatest accomplishment as a mom may not be something you do , but someone you raise".
Picture
Picture
Picture
She often will say, "We can't give our children what we don't have."
So for those weeks ahead she poured her heart into us in hopes that this message God gave her, the message of BECOMING MOMSTRONG, would be spread in and through us. But she has made sure that this message wasn't just for moms...... this powerful message was to encourage and help equip any woman who has influence in the life of a child.

LAUNCH DAY came and we were all ready with our reviews (Read my review on the blog here). My pre-ordered extra copies of the book and the companion bible study were on their way.
Our AMAZING book launch team pulled together and put Heidi on the Amazon BEST SELLER list in the first day!
Wowza!
How cool was that!?!
And of course I had also purchased a book with a request for a signed copy from Heidi, an accompanying bible study. and journal.
The Ministry
As if a book like Becoming Mom Strong wasn't enough to impact this generation of mothers and their children, Heidi continued to reveal her heart and God's plan for a new ministry to follow the Becoming Mom Strong book and Bible Study. And this vision was like no other I'd seen before. As the pieces began to unfold for this new Heidi St. John ministry we saw how she would integrate a more intense bible study into her already existing scripture writing challenge and weekly podcast. MOMSTRONG International was another tool to help us all in our "Becoming".

The best part of this journey of BECOMING, is that it was not over. This story that I've just shared with you is just a small piece of my Becoming. It was just the beginning really.

For months I have been praying about how Becoming Mom Strong and MomStrong International Ministry would fit into a greater vision God gave me more than 4 years ago. In the last several months I felt God giving me more clarity and I'm excited about the direction He is taking me.

One year  after the launch of Becoming MomStrong  I have been able to be apart a second launch team for Heidi's follow-up book Prayers for the Battlefield  . Preparing for the launch of this new book has been just as amazing as the first.
You'll see my review posted here on the blog Wednesday September 19th. The book officially releases Tuesday September 18th.

I am also beginning my own MomStrong Bible study in my home and hope to give highlights in some Facebook live videos and here on the blog if I'm able to keep up. I haven't quite decided where those videos will be posted yet. If following along with this study interests you just send me a quick message here via my email

"Today's moms need a special kind of strength- the kind that comes from God. We need support to get through. We need to learn how to live in right relationship with others. We need to take better care of ourselves. And most important, we need an ever-deepening desire to know God and His Word. In other words, we need to be MomStrong." ~ Heidi St. John

Even if you are not (or not yet) a mom, but have influence in the life of a child/children this is also for you! Grandmother, Aunt, Teacher, Church volunteer, or caregiver......THIS IS ALSO FOR YOU!

My desire is to start this bible study to develop a community of women who want to deepen their relationship with the Lord and support each other in Becoming MomStrong. God has called us to raise up the next generation.......AND WE CANNOT GIVE THOSE CHILDREN WHAT WE DON'T HAVE!  So let's link arms sweet sisters and study God's Word together. I look forward to spending time with you all.

This is how my Story of Becoming began. What will yours look like?

Much Love,
Melissa

Reflections of 2017- Pressing On To The New

1/3/2018

As I write this it is :
A fresh new day....
A fresh new week.....
A  fresh new month.....
A fresh new year......January 1, 2018

I'm not a fan of resolutions because often they fade as quickly as we take them on BUT I DO LOVE a fresh start! My prayer for 2018 is simple..... That I am not in the same place in the next 12 months that I am right now, that my relationship with my Lord is stronger and more intimate, and that I am able impact the lives around me!
Just as many of you, I have spent the last  few days, maybe even weeks, reflecting over my 2017 year. Although there has only been spurts of blogging going on here at Unpolished Rubies  this year, much of my attention has been on my website and my newest calling to home school my two little people (that began the fall of 2016). This year has been filled with lots of change and growth with plenty of challenge and messiness trailing behind. But, there is no doubt that God has been in the midst of it all.
Picture
As in the last several years of fresh starts, health also continues to be at the top of my list; but a healthy lifestyle also becomes more and more refined in its definition. God has revealed new perspectives and overall meaning to a  HEALTHY lifestyle. I'm sure you have seen this in many of my social media and my blog posts ,particularly one of my favorites Healthy Life With a Biblical Perspective. But much of this area remains a struggle for me despite all I've learned and gained in the fitness and wellness field. God has pulled me more in the direction of spiritual health this year. You see I have discovered that when I have spiritual growth in my life then I am able to deal with the mental struggles that come with doubts and fears in order to have the confidence and discipline needed to maintain the physical health goals I have.
I also continue to struggle with transition. And my transition periods are often messy. After completing our first year of homeschooling I knew changes were needed. Needless to say this new transition was no exception to my messiness trend. I spent much of my summer sorting through our homeschool transition period, mental mess and overwhelm, a gambit of emotions, sickness, and recovery.

And I won't lie, I am finding myself right back in this place as we enter a fresh new year.
When I am overwhelmed, anxiety is not far behind. I have struggled with anxiety for much my life (though I would have never admitted it years ago) ,however triggers and periods of anxiety have increased over the last several years.
I don't share this often because it is hard to be transparent about something in your life that is contrary to what you are trying so hard to promote, HEALTHY LIFE! Not only a healthy life, but a healthy life based on biblical truth! But the reality is, my friends, THE STRUGGLE IS VERY REAL".

I also know that God is good! He is continuing to work in me and this is where I find wisdom and strength!
Picture
(Full message found at THRIVE Christian Fellowship thriveKG.org)
Even as I reflect on the struggles of 2017 there have been so many blessings that have come out of them.
But, this past Sunday's message really resonated with me when my pastor pointed out the things we should say goodbye to versus the things we should say hello to as we look to the new year. Saying Goodbye to: RELIGION, EMPTY PURSUITS, WEAKNESS, the YESTERDAYS, and GIVING UP. Saying hello to: JESUS, which means REAL MEANING, REAL STRENGTH, TOMORROWS, and FINISHING WELL.
Further more the Apostle Paul addresses in his letter to the Philippians that he himself presses on to the ultimate goal which God has called him heavenward.
Picture
I am so thankful for the Christ-centered influences that have spoken into my life over this  past year as I toiled in periods of transition and anxiety! These influences have allowed me to press on forward, taking form in various ways. From precious friends who help me process my overwhelmed thoughts,  to christian authors, bloggers and pod-casters who have incredible ministries reaching messy hearts such as my own, and a new church family consisting of old and new friends.
My goal is to never stop learning and growing. Sometimes this means multiple reminders of lessons God has already tried to teach me including the discovery in my blog (Refiner's Fire).
God continues to use the refining process in all of us as long as we are willing to become a reflection of Him.

In the next few weeks I hope to unpack a few of these incredible things that influenced my growth in 2017, though I can not make any promises (just being REAL). In the mean time I'd love for you to subscribe to my blog if you haven't already. I have recently created some Free Downloadable Resources exclusively for my subscribers as well as a whole NEW page of resources and links to help you start off your new year well. So I'd love for you to head over to my RESOURCES page, subscribe, and grab some additional resources while your there.
I hope you can reflect on your own 2017 and be thankful for all God has carried you through; the struggles and growth it has brought you, the challenges and the victory won! Most of all I pray you would focus on the blessings, saying goodbye to empty pursuits; forgetting what is behind and pressing forward to what lies ahead according to God's purpose for you! Remember you are loved and God has a plan for you in this new year!
Blessings Precious Rubies,
Melissa

The Battle of Motherhood- Becoming Mom Strong Book review

9/19/2017

Friends, this first year of homeschooling has been an incredible year of discovery, learning and growth for me and my family! This adventure has forced me to slow down and dig deep into discovering what God truly has for me. Earlier this year my sweet friend turned me to Heidi St. John, The Busy Mom podcast. A homeschooling mom of seven (yep 7!), Heidi, has a passion for speaking biblical truth in the midst of today's culture. She offers wisdom and encouragement (to moms especially) for the resistance we as Christians face in today's issues.
Picture
Picture
When she began talking about her new book  and offered the chance to be a part of her launch team, I jumped at the chance to be a part of this vision she had for Becoming Mom Strong.  Being a part of BecomingMomStrong launch team couldn't have come at a more perfect time. God used Heidi St. John, The Busy Mom, the Becoming Mom Strong book, and the launch team in such a special way. This book reached every crevice of my mama heart, confirming so many things God has been already showing me this last year as a newly homeschooling mom.
Heidi's words echoed my own thoughts, feelings, and heart struggles as I read each chapter.
"....because this business of shaping hearts is also shaping mine. Motherhood has exposed weakness in me I never knew I had, has driven me to limits of what I thought I could do, and has filled my heart with hopes and dreams I never imagined for a future I can only entrust to God."
-Heidi St. John, Becoming Mom Strong (pg 35)
Picture
This book has encouraged and empowered me to suit up and fight for the hearts of my little people. Because mamas, this IS A BATTLE we are in! Satan's desperate attempt to steal the hearts of the next generation is fierce. His schemes are found in the culture shift we are in right now; just look at the headlines, on social media and sadly in our back yards. Words are often laced with hate and pride. But this IS NOT the end! Heidi encourages us to rise up, engage in the battle! Not by defending our beliefs and opinions on social media or rallying in our streets; our battle begins in our homes, equipping our children with the truth of God's Word.
Picture
Picture

How do we fight this battle?

How do we fight this battle when all we can see are the GIANTS in front of us? If you are asking this question, you are not alone.
I think of the Israelite's as they faced the Philistine army of war. Goliath a fierce Philistine champion, brought fear to the Israelite's as he challenged them to battle.
Like the Philistines, I admit that I have struggled with fear for much of my life. Satan has used this tactic on me many times. Heidi illustrates the bravery of David, a mere boy, facing that giant with the truth of God's word, a few stones, and a sling. He had the courage to defeat his giant..... do we? If not then, "Sometimes the only way to do something is to do it afraid", says Heidi.
" The reality is that we all face different kinds of giants in our lives. The question isn't weather they'll show up; it's weather we'll have the courage to load our own stones into our own sling when the time comes."
-Heidi St. John Becoming Mom Strong (pg. 39)
Picture
Picture
Take comfort sweet sisters, God does not expect us to face this battle alone.

Becoming Mom Strong brings light to what it means to face motherhood with the strength only God can give. Heidi St. John does this from the perspective of the raw reality that her own life and motherhood struggles brought her, speaking from her own experience as a homeschooling mother of seven. In the trenches she has prevailed, and now she is calling us as moms to equip ourselves for the battle of our own children's hearts and raise up the next generation of God fearing leaders.

Heidi often says, " We can't give our children what we don't have". This begins with the acknowledgment and surrender of our weakness where God's strength is at it's best. Becoming Mom Strong has definitely allowed me to see more clearly the importance of being a mother. We ARE raising the next generation of warriors!
"God has already given us the blueprint for becoming MomStrong, and that blueprint is found in the Bible. He has entrusted us with bringing up the next generation, and He says that His strength is made perfect in weakness."
-Heidi St. John Becoming Mom Strong
Picture
Picture
There were so many inspiring nuggets of encouragement and truth in this book that it's hard to share all in one post.  I hope you will meet me back here as I
share more thoughts in future blog posts.

Friends, author Heidi St. John has a vision that this would not just be a book alone, but be a movement! Becoming Mom Strong is NOW AVAILABLE coupled with a bible study and journal and I encourage you to get your own copy today! I assure you this is sweeping the nation and beyond as mothers are already banning together in bible study groups for become Mom Strong together. I will even be starting my own bible study group here in my home town very soon. Will you join us in Becoming Mom Strong!?!
Blessings and Strength Precious Mamas,

Melissa

A Tribute to Ten Years

7/7/2017

God certainly had a sense of humor as the events of the previous day (July 6, 2007) unfolded ten years ago. I was twelve days away from my due date with my first baby. My husband Randy was to be the best man in his best friends wedding 3 hours away form home.

As we sat in the doctors office my hidden anxiety built to the words , "We cannot send you home. We have to send you to the hospital to be induced".
Wait, WHAT!?! I am a Wedding Coordinator/Designer, how can I possibly take the best man away from a wedding?
The suppressed anxiety of my husband being away so close to my due date had increased my blood pressure. It was beyond my control at this point.

After twenty-four hours on labor inducing medication and a few complications my son was born on July 7, 2007 (7/7/07 the epic birthday)!

And so our ADVENTURE began.......TEN YEARS AGO!
In tribute to my son's big milestone and with the help of Facebook "On This Day"  I have compiled some memories to share with you and as a gift to him.

My #littlewolverine, you are no longer my little boy but now a young man. This has been a tremendous year of growth for you. Somehow God has given me strength and persistence for the years of struggle with your strong will. We endured a hard year of homeschooling focusing much time on building character. But, your strong will has given you a determination and strength that will make you an amazing leader like your dad; yet your heart is tender, allowing God to lead you in the right direction. You work hard always willing to lend a hand. A true MacGregor legacy. You have never met a stranger who couldn't potentially be a life long friend. You seek people out hoping to meet a need. You have become an incredible prayer warrior and your giving heart is a virtue that is always evident. You are innovative and brilliant when it comes to building things. And you ALWAYS have something to say! You ARE an AMAZING young man! Your Dad and I are so blessed and  proud to be your parents! We love you Buddy!

Fit Friday: You're Not a Firefighter

Today I have a special treat for you! I want to introduce you to my friend Rialand Jones. Riland is one of the coolest guys I know, with a personality all his own and unique concept on fitness & nutrition. He calls himself the Fat Assassin®, and for good reason, because he has more than 11 years as a Certified Personal Trainer and over 14 years experience in the industry. He is now an author of his own book, Healthy Mind Healthy Body Better Life!

Interestingly enough we didn't meet in the fitness industry. Sharing another common path, we met several years back when we both
were doing business in the Wedding industry. Rialand is still a Master of Ceremonies on the occasional weekend when he is not helping clients slay fat.

We reconnected after my transformation and I started following his inspirational posts on social media. I have learned quite a lot from this guy so grab some paper and pen, you might want to take some notes.

You’re Not A Firefighter…So Stop Trying to Put Out Fires (In Your Muscles)

There I was. Looking at my reflection in the mirror. Counting my reps. Concentrating on squeezing the muscle I was trying to demolish. The reps started getting higher. 12…13…14…15…then I felt it! I was doing standing dumbbell lateral raises and my shoulders started feeling like they were on fire. I mean it burned so bad I literally wanted to throw the dumbbells down and lay on the floor so I didn’t have to hold my own arms up.

That’s the moment when my reflection spoke to me. It’s said, “You’re not a damn fireman so stop trying to put out the fire in your shoulders!” Of course my reflection didn’t literally say that. But that little voice in my head did. So I took a deep breath and blasted through those last 3 reps.
Picture
See…it’s those last few reps of your set that level you up. It’s those reps you do after your muscles start to feel like they’re on fire that give you progress and the results you’re looking for. I always tell my clients that’s where you make your “money”. And by money I mean those reps are when you get the most bang for your workout buck.

Here’s the big problem though. Most people act like firefighters when they workout. As soon as they start to feel that burn, they stop. Even if they haven’t done all the reps they were supposed to do. Is that you!?! Are you a firefighter in the gym!?! When you feel that burn do you cut your set short so the burning stops!?!?

You better cut that out! Because you’re cutting yourself AND your progress short! You exercise to get results right? Right! When it comes to lifting weights  (resistance training) the last few reps that burn help you maximize your results.

There’s no need to get into the sciency nerd stuff behind why your muscles start to “burn.” Just know that the burn is something you should be trying to achieve instead of trying to avoid. It’s literally one of the most important parts of your workout.

Just like the chorus in that old Usher song, “Let it burn. Let it burn. Gotta let it burn.”

So next time you’re working out and you start to feel the fire in your muscles, just let it burn. Trust me, if you do that consistently you’ll see a lot more changes in your body and a lot better results. Let the real firefighters do what they do best and stop trying to be one of them when you’re in the gym.

Now go be awesome!

TO MY BELOVED

6/5/2017

Picture
Eighteen years ago today we said "I DO"! We have been together just over half my life and married almost as long now. Though my love for you has always been steadfast it seems to get harder and harder to find ways to show you how much of my heart you really have. I have pined for days and weeks over a gift that would show you just that. My practical yet creative nature posed yet an even bigger challenge. Is there an earthly "thing" that can truly pay tribute to the years we have spent together?

This years lifestyle changes through homeschooling has brought so many new perspectives to my life, including  finding more joy in simplicity of life. The desire for "stuff" is less important than it used to be. Really, this was your view all along; never asking for anything and  unselfishly giving of yourself every minute of the day (although I don't always see it that way). Each holiday or special event I ask, "Babe, what do you want?" The answer  always the same, "Nothing" .

But, the question still stands......
How do I celebrate our many years together?
How do I honor the love we've shared?
How do I tell you and show you how much you mean to me?

Though the fanciest strung words cannot come close to bringing light to these questions, I am going to attempt to try! Words that are often unspoken, but deeply felt.  Words that are often obscured by complaints or criticisms but reexamined as the very things I admire and respect.

The Things I hate to love about you

Complaint: You are always working/helping someone else.
Truth: You are the hardest working man I know (only toe to toe with your 80 year old dad). You hardly ever stop. Even having what could be a debilitating autoimmune disease, you keep going, often not even saying how much it hurts or how uncomfortable you are. Your heart is to provide for us (your family) as God designed you to do. Though it feels like you're "always working", you still find time and energy to cook dinners, read with our children, help with bathing, bedtime, and so much more. You are undeniably an amazing husband and father! This goes unsaid too often. And, it does not stop there. Your heart is also to help others. You do so regularly, without expectations of compensation or return favors. You simply do it to help others using the innumerable skills and gifts God gave you. I love that you work hard, are obedient to God, and have a heart to help others.
Complaint:How are you so "perfect" at everything? And why do you always want to take over /take charge of things?
Truth: The answer to this is deeply rooted in the above truth. You have an insatiable drive to learn all that you can to be able to do things for yourself (not having to rely on the skills of others). However, I also see that you are incredibly gifted with your hands. God has blessed you with abilities to learn and execute many trades and accomplish them well. I have seen you work your way through your career, earn the respect of many, and become a strong leader in the process. You have an extraordinary gift for leadership with an ability to keep peace between conflicting parties. And though these gifts seem to translate as "taking over" often times at home, I also respect the incredible leader that you are. You are diligent in doing your job well at work and at home. I repeatedly neglect to see that you are only trying  to help out at home and take some of my load. I am so grateful for the skills that you have and how it has saved us time and money in the practical areas of our life. Though it may seem you are "perfect" at nearly everything, I know, the truth behind that "perfection" is your hard work and drive to accomplish things completely. You are my MR. AWESOME!
Complaint: You are  not supportive of my interests and  passions.
Truth: You ARE my biggest fan!
I am a dreamer and my creative brain has taken over more times than I can count. Though you have allowed me to follow many of my crazy ideas, your intuition keeps me balanced. When I am trusting and follow my heart you are practical and see when things are just not right. Over and over you have had to pick up the pieces in my failures and disappointments  but, you have been my #1 supporter in my greatest accomplishments.  Thank you for being my cornerstone, pillar of strength,  stability and countenance when few others seem to be. You ARE my biggest Fan!
Picture
Complaint: We are too close to your family! Lack of privacy is an issue. Your family always seems to need you.
Truth: Though my complaints seem valid at times, so many blessing have come form living close to family. You value your family and I admire that greatly. The relationships you have with your family and the time we are able to spend with them is something to be treasured. This is a trait and privileged that we have been able to pass on to our children. This beautiful place that we call home, our "creek life" is a place filled with memories; from our first date, to our wedding day, to our daily lives today with our children. We have rich heritage here on the creek! I am beyond blessed to be a MacGregor!

There are so many more things still left unsaid but I hope the one thing that is never overlooked or forgotten is this:
"My beloved is mine, and I am his;" Song of Solomon 2:16

Happy Anniversary, I love you, Mr. Awesome!

Fit Friday: Banana Oatmeal Protein Muffins

When you are hungry what kind of snacks do you grab?
What is your go to food choice?
How about those kiddos? What kind of snacks are they reaching for?

I have tried to make it a habit of providing healthy snacks available for my whole family. I know all too well that if I don't they (ok myself included) will go looking for high sugar and junk food snacks filled with empty calories. I would rather my littles have nutrient dense foods, wouldn't you? Fruits & Veggies are great but it can be tough getting those little people to eat healthy proteins throughout the day.

I have gotten more creative in the kitchen the last several years.....and that is saying something because I am NOT a cook. My passion for nutrition in no way reflects my cooking skills. Although, the change to a healthy lifestyle has forced me to expand my knowledge and skills in the kitchen, for sure! If it weren't for blogs and Pintrest I would be severely lacking, still. But, I'm a teachable girl and I can get creative if I set my mind to it. However, IT HAS TO BE SIMPLE!  I have been know to take a couple recipes and tweak them to make them my own. These Banana Oatmeal Protein Muffins are one of those. Did I say simple ? These little guys are sooo yummy, protein packed, have clean & nutrient dense ingredients, low fat, and did I say so yummy?
The best part about these muffins are that I have added extra protein.
Did you know? Proteins are the building blocks for bones, muscles and cartilage. This means that if you are working out proteins are super important in your recovery. I could do a whole blog on proteins.....but not today. We will save that for another time. However, one of the quickest and cleanest ways I add protein in my diet is with the Shaklee Life Shake Protein. Here are a few reasons why I use Shaklee protein.
Picture
Picture
The Life Energizing Shake comes packed with:
  • 24 grams* of protein, including 16 grams of ultra-pure, plant-based, non-GMO soy protein with precise ratios of 9 essential amino acids, optimized for high protein quality
  • Added leucine to help preserve lean muscle and achieve a healthier weight
  • A powerful patent-pending combination of prebiotics and one billion CFU of patented probiotics
  • Omega-3 (ALA) to support heart and brain health
Contains no artificial flavors, sweeteners or preservatives, is gluten free, lactose free, low glycemic, and Kosher.
Friends, this is truly incredible stuff. I use it everyday! Its is so versatile and of course stable enough for baking. If you would like more information or would like to give this amazing product a try contact me or visit this link.
So yesterday, I decided to take the plunge and do a Facebook Live video on my page ,with my son, as we made these delightful little treats. You can catch the replay (actually in 2 parts ) on Facebook at Melissa K. MacGregor. I need a little more practice on this Live Video thing but, it was kinda fun.
I hope you will give these delish little morsels of foodstuff a try. Guaranteed to be approved by all age groups with no worries of empty calories or sugar crashes. I'd love to hear what you think of them. And if you have some creative snack ideas to share I'd love to hear those too. You can send your ideas to melissakmacgregor@gmail.com.
Are you hungry for a snack? I am! Enjoy!

My apologies for this last weeks hiatus here on the blog. When you are home educating you have rough days and rough weeks. Last week just happened to be a little of both. Add in the hubs work picnic, a new client, website changes, and writing,.......  well it gets overwhelming quickly. Honestly with everything going on I lost a little momentum last week in my writing. This being said, I'm just going to give you a couple quick updates rather than my typical Wisdom Wednesday post.
I have been diligently working on updates to my website, Facebook pages, Google+, and general web presence. There is an endless world of learning in our age of technology. For me it's relearning some areas after stepping back from business for a time.
One of my biggest undertakings was the make-over I gave my old "Diaries of an OCD Mama" Facebook "LIKE" page. It now shows consistency with my website at so you will find it under Melissa K. MacGregor .In addition to my blog I will be using this page to share more fitness and nutrition content, share links to articles and resources for spiritual growth as well as growth for physical health, events, Health Chats, transformation stories, and I'm even working on content for "Facebook Live" videos. So be sure to head over to my new improved page and give it a Like or Follow so you don't miss all the extra fun things I have going on.

If you still haven't heard the story how I entered the world of fitness and nutrition bringing me to the current manifestation of a three year dream, check it out on the Nutrition Nuts & Bolts tab on my website. I have made a few tweaks there as well.
Don't forget that the Discover Beautiful Accountability Group has just started! But, its not to late to join. If you are working on physical or spiritual growth and need some community for support I would love for you to join us. It's a closed group for a more intimate setting where struggles and successes can be shared.

As I said in my last blog post Healthy Life with a Biblical Perspective I wholeheartedly believe a healthy life doesn't go without the spiritual element. God designed it that way. He created our physical bodies and they are a gift to us. Taking care of these gifts (as any other) should be an extension of our worship to Him. But, even if we do believe this, sometimes our own minds get in the way. That is what Discover Beautiful is all about. I cannot wait to see this community grow. And, the great thing about this group is that you would be considered a VIP when I add new resources to my website like my new Foundations Nutritional Coaching programs that were just added a few weeks ago. I just love encouraging people one-on-one through their goals and sharing the knowledge I have to help make lasting and life long changes. That is just so rewarding!
Picture
Well, that is all I have for now but keep checking in for more exciting updates. I hope you will meet me back here for the next blog or maybe a Live Facebook feed at the Melissa K. MacGregor Facebook Page. You never know!
Blessings,

Fit Friday: Healthy Life with a Biblical Perspective

On this weeks Wisdom Wednesday " That Fire in My Heart", I shared a little bit about the vision God gave me to encourage others through writing and the passion to teach/coach healthy lifestyle. Today I want to talk a a bit about the accountability program  I created that brings these two things together. Writing/blogging and teaching/coaching healthy living are seemingly two completely different things, but molding them together always made sense to me.

I've mentioned before that, I wholeheartedly believe a healthy life doesn't go without the spiritual element. God designed it that way. He created our physical bodies and they are a gift to us. Taking care of these gifts (as any other) should be an extension of our worship to Him. But, even if we do believe this, sometimes our own minds get in the way. If this weren't true then we wouldn't be seeing Meme's all over our social media feed motivating us to workout and eat healthy, right!?!  Are these messages encouraging us in the right ways? As my walk with the Lord has deepened I have often wondered if some of these messages were actually motivating me in the right perspective. This brings in a third element, healthy minds. I found that creating an atmosphere where Christ was glorified was more important than elevating ourselves to accomplish a goal. When we are motivating ourselves with messages that WE CAN DO IT, or WE ARE STRONG  are we missing what GOD can do in us?

Monday I shared this verse from
Psalm 37:4, I'm going to share it again because it applies here to.

Picture
" Delight yourself also in the Lord,
And He shall give you the desires of your heart." Psalm 37:4

This scripture tells us that if we delight in the Lord, He will give us what we desire. But, here is the thing we often miss......If we focus our attention on God first then He will align our hearts with His heart and His desires.

There have been a few times I have had a plan to compete again or set a new goal in my fitness journey that has changed midstream because my desires had changed. Here, is often the reason why. If I focus mainly on the "goal" first, I risk making that goal an idol, elevating it or myself above God. Filling my mind with truth is important in the process of creating a healthy life. It's really quite profound!

I'm certainly not saying that all the meme's are bad for motivation, what I am saying is that creating a healthy mind should be based on the truth! Again, we continuously have to be reminded of the truth keeping each other accountable because our minds are so easily corrupted by Satan's lies. Satan is the master of deception, always twisting and manipulating, targeting our weaknesses. A simple message intended to encourage and empower us can be used by Satan to lure us into discontent, contentiousness, selfish ambition, jealousy, and self-empowerment. I know, I've been there many times. I have surrounded myself in the fitness culture where the "do whatever it takes to reach your goal" mentality has left me unsettled. Friends, this is not truth! Truth, God's word says:
Matthew 6:25-34
25
“Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?27 Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?

28 “So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; 29 and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?
31 “Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

This is what Discover Beautiful is all about. "But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you." (vs 33)

Like most, I can have periods when I become relaxed and let go of some of my healthy habits. As I've already explained I'm not just talking about good habits for my physical health but also my spiritual growth and self care.I have learned when I practice good habits taking care of myself physically, mentally, and spiritually I am a better servant to my Lord Jesus and to others. I believe all these things work together and I have found that I am most successful when I have accountability. This is why I created DISCOVER BEAUTIFUL, to help others create healthy habits with a biblical perspective. There are no strings attached when participating in this group just a place where we can all share our journey discovering our own beautiful. At this time Discover Beautiful is a FREE group. However, along with sharing encouragement I will also be sharing information, tools, tips and products with no obligations other than the purpose of guiding and coaching you through your journey. My vision for this group is that it be an interactive safe community where encouragement, success and struggles are shared. This will take place in a Closed Facebook Group setting found at Unpolished Rubies #Discover Beautiful where you can request to be a part of the group. You can also visit the Discover Beautiful Page on my website where you can register and find practical tools for healthy living. I hope to implement online or in home bible studies, local fellowships and meetups, health chats, and video (zoom) discussions. There is potential for so many things in this group as the Lord leads. And, I am so excited to see how this group unfolds. Will you join me? I hope you will!
Blessing,
Melissa
